Certified Marine Testing

J&A has performed testing to a variety of standards, including ABS HAB, IMO MLC, Lloyds Comfort Class, RINA, DNV, ISO, EU CE, MIL-STD-740-2, MIL-STD-1474E.   J&A’s deep technical knowledge and experience allow us to resolve many testing and compliance issues in the field, saving builders, owners, and operators time and money.

Types of testing include:

  • Documentation for shipyards or owners

  • Acceptance per contract specifications

  • Factory acceptance tests

  • Pre/Post shipyard work

  • Dispute resolution (testimony)

Specific projects include:

  • Large Passenger Ferry - A series of large passenger ferries (100m+) was required by the purchasing municipality to limit noise and vibration.   Testing on the vessels was done by J&A on behalf of the municipality.  A noise exceedance was noted in one portion of the passenger seating, and J&A offered correction advice, which resolved the issue.

  • Large Warship  - J&A has been the incumbent service provider for noise and vibration acceptance testing on a series of large warships, with the results submitted to the Navy.  Testing includes noise and vibration habitability, machinery vibration limits, and mast sensor vibration limits. Testing requires a complex instrumentation installation - 80 channels of data are simultaneously recorded.  In cases of excess noise or vibration, J&A has contracted separately to engineer fixes or provide diagnoses regarding the cause of excess.

  • Small Ferry - J&A contracted with the builders of a series of high-speed passenger ferries for certification of noise and vibration limits.  The limits were set by the port authority where the boats were to operate.  J&A reports and recommendations were well received, and the boats entered service.

  • Patrol Boat, 85’ - J&A performed acceptance testing and data logging for a series of Coastal/Riverine patrol/attack boats for the US Navy.  The work was done under the supervision of the Navy Combatant Craft Division

  • Yacht Evaluation - A potential buyer of a 150’ yacht hired J&A for a noise and vibration evaluation prior to purchase.  J&A conducted the testing, inclusive of underway cruise, at- anchor with utilities running, and zero-speed stabilizers.  The J&A report outlined some areas for potential improvement, which were implemented, and the prospective owner wound up purchasing the yacht.

  • Oil Tanker Pumping - A European classification society required certification of in-air radiated noise during oil transfer pumping evolutions.  J&A traveled to the ship and made the necessary measurements, per the RINA Class Rules.  Our results showed that the original machinery was in excess of the noise limits, but with the installation of improved machinery, the ship tested in compliance.

  • DP Noise - An offshore vessel had complaints of excess noise in the berthing area during thruster DP operation.  J&A was hired to evaluate the noise.  We found that the noise levels in the Berth spaces and the mess room were in excess of I.M.O. limits, to the extent that wearing hearing protection was recommended.  J&A submitted a report with the measurement results and recommendations for correction. Further action is pending.

  • Shaft Torque, power, and vibration - J&A is equipped and experienced with propulsion/shaft-line measurements, including:

o   Torque – Steady State, power calculation - Quasi static, Shaft bend/alignment

o   Lateral vibration - (non-contact)
